Fire Spinning Safety Guidelines

1.

Proper Fuel and Storage

  • Fuel Selection

Use fuels specifically designed for fire performance, such as paraffin. Avoid flammable fuels like gasoline or diesel.

  • Storage

Store all fuel and props in a well-ventilated, secure area away from children, pets, and ignition sources.

  • Storage Containers

Use metal containers with secure lids to prevent spills or leaks.

  • Storage Location

Keep fuel and props out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.

2.

Preparing to Spin

  • Clothing

Wear natural fibers (cotton, denim). Avoid synthetics (polyester, spandex) as they melt and can cause severe burns.

  • Hair

Tie back long hair securely and consider dampening it to reduce the risk of ignition.

  • Warm-Up

Rehearse your routine without fire to ensure comfort and confidence with your moves.

  • Clear Space

Make sure the spinning area is free of flammable materials, obstructions, and hazards.

  • Safety Equipment

Have a fire blanket, fire extinguisher, and first-aid kit on hand and easily accessible.

  • Safety Spotter

Designate a spotter who understands the risks and knows how to use safety equipment effectively.

3.

During the Spin

  • Wind Awareness

Pay attention to wind direction. Avoid spinning with the wind blowing toward you.

  • Fuel Management

Do not over-soak your wicks. Spin off excess fuel safely, away from people and yourself.

  • Lighting Props

Light your props away from your body and face.

  • Move Selection

Only perform well-practiced moves you’re confident with.

  • Keep Props Moving

Avoid stagnant flames—movement prevents heat buildup and damage.

  • Communication

Establish clear signals with your safety spotter for emergencies or assistance.

  • Situational Awareness

Stay alert to your surroundings and avoid dragging props on rough or flammable surfaces.

4.

Extinguishing the Fire

  • Smothering the Flame

Use a fire blanket or damp towel to extinguish flames.

  • Proper Blanket Use

Ensure the blanket is not padded, as padding can fan the flames.

  • Fire Extinguisher

Use only if needed for larger fires, and follow proper use procedures.

  • Cooling Props

Allow props to cool in a safe, designated area before handling or storing.

5.

In Case of Emergency

  • Burns

Immediately cool the burn with running water for at least 20 minutes.

  • Clothing and Jewelry

Gently remove anything near the burn unless it is stuck to the skin.

  • Seek Medical Help

Get professional care for serious burns or injuries.

  • Call Emergency Services

Don’t hesitate to call 911 if the situation escalates.

  • Follow the Spotter

Trust and follow your safety spotter’s guidance—they are your first line of defense.
